When composing an article for readers online there are some simple writing tips that could help you get the most out of your efforts.

Certain aspects of preparing an article to be read online differ from the more casual off-line approach to writing. Attention needs to be paid to the ‘technical’ and ’structural’ elements involved in constructing an article for online readers.

Let’s review 4 areas of preparation involved in online article writing and how it may differ from ‘traditional’ offline articles.

INTRIGUING HEADLINE

The headline should jump out at the reader and capture their interest to read further into the article. Whether you’re using humor, shock, or appealing to the reader on some emotional level it needs to make the reader pause.

Online this can be a bit of a challenge due to the reader’s ability in just a nano second to quickly click away. The challenge is compounded further by certain restrictions article directories have in place. Any wording deemed unfit or a misrepresentation of content will prevent your article from even being published online. 
Headlines that often work online would take the direction of ‘How to”, “The Greatest”, “The Easiest”, or even a numbered list such as “5 Ways to”.

DON’T USE MISLEADING HEADLINES

Using a headline that inaccurately reflects the article content just to capture attention generally won’t work online. Browsers who open up an article are expecting to view information as indicated in the headline. When this doesn’t happen they quickly, and sometimes irritably, click away. With access to so much information readers will leave without a second thought.

ONLINE ARTICLE FORMATTING

When submitting an article online it is recommended to include a resource box so readers can link back to your site if they choose. The number of words and links you use will face the scrutiny of both the directories and the readers. You’ll need to be concise and convincing in order to get the reader to do what you want them to do.

Most articles will be accompanied by a short summary or abstract that again is monitored by directories. Your abstract is limited to just a few sentences in which you’re convincing readers why they should read your article.

If you’re submitting article to ezines or perhaps publishing them in a newsletter you’ll need to pay attention to the number of characters you use per line. If not done correctly your composition will not appear in a uniformed orderly fashion on the internet.

KEYWORD USAGE

The use of keywords in every aspect of article writing from titles to the body of content down to the abstracts themselves is critical. If your work is not optimized correctly with keywords neither search engines nor readers will every be able to locate your article content.

Keyword placement, accuracy, frequency of and the manner in which they are used are closely monitored by search engines. Keywords are the beacons that attract and guide search engines to your article itself. If this task is not completed correctly your article exposure will suffer.

Making money online faster than anyone else can be a very excited adventure. Blogs make achieving success much greater when it comes to making money fast.  Blogs are easy to make and Google really really really really likes them. (REALLY)

A lot of people get into blogging and don’t realize that there is training for such a venture. Yes you can start a blog for Free and you can write til your hearts content but if your not apart of a training group then your more than likely not making any money with your blog.

With this one simple article I’m going to show you how to quickly put together your own podcast. I won’t be able to go into detail on everything, but I’ll definitely get you started on the right track. And just so we start off right, I want to give you my definition.

Why? Because I’ve seen a lot of people put an MP3 file on their web site and proudly proclaim, “I have a podcast!”

Um, no. An audio file people can download is not a podcast. Even several audio files people can download isn’t necessarily a podcast.

Here’s my definition: A series of audio or video files that can be subscribed to and automatically downloaded as new episodes are released.

Notice I didn’t say anything about whether the files are spoken word or music, whether they’re amateur-hour or professional sounding, or even whether they are free or for pay. To be called a podcast you just need a series of audio or video files (how long that series lasts is up to you) that can be subscribed to so programs like iTunes can automatically download them when new episodes are available.

An episode can be a minute in length, or it can be an hour or more in length. If you’re just getting started, I suggest going with a shorter length because doing a podcast requires a commitment and while you’re raring to go right now with a marathon session, what about next week or the week after? Especially when some unexpected “life situation” pops up?

You can always go from a long podcast to a short one, or vice versa, but in general, the more consistent you are, the more comfortable your audience will be. And that holds true for more than just the length of each episode. There are some “stream of consciousness” podcasts that are good, but in general, a show that gives the audience great content in a format they recognize will do better than one that’s all over the road every time.

I’ve found one of the best ways to create a podcast is with the “chunk” method — it is created using chunks of audio that can be swapped in and out as needed.

For example, you’d record your introduction as one audio file. Answering emails from readers would be a different audio file. The main content would be a separate audio file. You’ll end up with multiple files that can then be put together to create an entire episode.

The big benefit of this is two-fold. First, if you have paid sponsors for your podcast you can sell the space twice — first as the “live” podcast, and a second time as a part of the archive. And since your podcast is put together in chunks, replacing one ad with another is trivial.

The second big reason is even better, because it’s useful even if you’re not selling ad space. You can create multiple chunks all at once, and then mix and match them in the future. Maybe you solicit listener feedback — you can set up your equipment and record a half dozen snippets asking for calls and emails. That may be all you ever need for your podcast, because you just rotate them in one after the other from one show to the next.

There are many places in a typical podcast where pre-recorded snippets can be used. By setting up yours in such a fashion, each episode might only need the main content and a “personalized” opening or closing.

Which makes putting together a podcast quick and easy. Record the new chunks, grab some pre-recorded chunks, and “paste” them altogether. Voila, a new episode is done and ready to go!

I’m over at Flickr (also Yahoo! owned) and none of the choices for blogging are Yahoo! 360. I assume this is because 360 uses some other sort of blogging software. And, while I’m adding, what about MySpace blogs? I don’t really want to start another blog just to blog Flickr stuff, but I’ve been getting more into Flickr recently. I’ve got a tech blog at http://douglasawh.wordpress.co… but that’s primarily just to keep notes for work and I don’t want to put Flickr stuff on it.

This isn’t an important issue to me. I just wanted to see how the automatic blogging from Flickr worked. I think I might have set up a LiveJournal at some point and never used it. I’m not sure. I could very easily set up another wordpress blog at wordpress.com since I’m familiar with them, but I see no need.

It’s unfortunate that Yahoo! doesn’t do a better job of intergrating its services.
